Clinical Case Report of Dr. Wu Mingjie — Reflections on Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment of a Persistent Cough
Patient Profile
The patient is a 30-year-old female friend who had been suffering from a persistent cough for over one month. During this period, she sought treatment through Western medicine, including injections and oral medications. However, her symptoms did not improve; instead, she experienced increasing discomfort and a general decline in well-being.
Treatment History
As the condition failed to resolve, I reached out to my mentor, Dr. Wu Mingjie, via WeChat to request clinical guidance and herbal support. After carefully reviewing the symptoms, Dr. Wu performed a precise Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pattern differentiation. He identified the core pathology as unresolved external pathogenic factors with impaired Lung qi dissemination, and formulated a treatment strategy focused on dispersing the Lung, relieving cough, and supporting the body’s natural healing process.
Treatment Course
The patient followed Dr. Wu’s prescribed herbal formula and took only two doses of Chinese herbal medicine. Remarkable improvement was observed in a very short time.
During follow-up on the following day, the patient reported:
• Complete resolution of the cough
• Restoration of energy and vitality
• Full return to normal physical function
• No remaining discomfort or symptoms
Date: December 22, 2025
Patient: Female, 30 years old
Diagnosis: Cough with itchy throat for one month.
Trigger: inhalation of dust.
Prescription:
• Bai Bu (Stemona Root) – 10 g
• Qian Hu (Peucedanum Root) – 10 g
• Zi Wan (Aster Root) – 30 g
• Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Herb) – 10 g
• Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) – 10 g
• Gan Cao (Licorice Root) – 6 g
• Chuan Bei (Fritillaria Bulb) – 6 g
Clinical Outcome
This case demonstrated rapid and definitive therapeutic results, highlighting the distinctive strengths of TCM when pattern differentiation is accurate and treatment is precisely targeted. Compared with prolonged symptomatic management, TCM addresses the root imbalance and facilitates the body’s inherent capacity to restore health naturally.
Personal Reflections
This case once again reinforced my conviction that:
Accurate pattern differentiation leads to exponential clinical results;
when treatment follows nature, health returns effortlessly.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is not inherently slow. When the core pathomechanism is correctly identified, herbal medicine can act swiftly and decisively—often with outcomes that appear truly remarkable.
Acknowledgment
